Thomas J. Bayles

Partner

Mr. Bayles is renowned in the legal industry for his expertise in estate planning, estate taxes, income taxes, business planning, and real estate transactions. He is a partner at JensenBayles, LLP, a position he has held since 2003. He also serves as a board member at DOVE Center and previously was a board member at the Exchange Club of St. George Foundation in 2012 and 2013. He served as president of the Southern Utah Estate Planning Council in 2003 and 2012, the St. George Exchange Club in 2011, and the Southern Utah Bar Association in 2012. He was acting director of the Southern Utah Estate Planning Council in 2001, 2002, and 2010, as a board member of the Washington County School District Foundation Board from 2002 to 2008, and as co-chairman of the Utah State Bar Spring Convention. He previously served as an associate attorney at Snow Jensen and Reece, PC from 1998 to 2003.

Mr. Bayles began his career with an AA from Dixie State College in 1990 before obtaining a BA from Weber State University in 1993. He then went on to Washburn University to earn an MBA from their School of Business in 1994, and a JD from their School of Law and a tax proficiency certificate in 1997. He is a member of the Southern Utah Bar Association, the Utah State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

Mr. Bayles has been recognized for his work many times. He has held an AV Preeminent Rating with Martindale-Hubbell since 2014, and held a BV rating since 2003. He was named one of Utah's Legal Elite from the State's Top Lawyers as Voted by Their Peers, one of Utah's Legal Elite from Estate Planning in 2004, and the Wall Street Journal gave him an Award in Economics in 1992. He has also authored numerous articles published in professional journals and has presented and lectured at conferences, conventions, colleges and seminars on topics in his fields of expertise.

Robert M. Jensen

Partner

Mr. Jensen has lived in Southern Utah for most of his life and if you ask him, you'll find he thinks he built half the houses here too. Growing up with a father who worked as a contractor, he gained valuable experience. He worked with his family's construction business which taught him to work hard and helped him understand the nuances and special rules pertaining to construction. He also put himself through his undergraduate degree and Law School by pouring concrete. These experiences have increased his ability to understand and be an effective advocate for his clients. He is passionate, thorough and committed to helping his clients learn to protect themselves and save later heartache.

After graduating with honors from Brigham Young University in English, he continued his education at the J. Reuben Clark Law School where he served as the Executive Editor for the Education and Law Journal. Since his graduation from law school in 1996, he has been actively involved in local politics, in his local church congregation and on several community organizations, including serving as President of the Erin Kimball Foundation & the Southern Utah Bar Association, as a member of the Southern Utah Home Builders Association's Education Committee, as well as serving as a county party chair for two years. Currently he is actively engaged in his local congregation.

Though he pursued the law, Robert hasn't been able to leave the construction industry behind. Mr. Jensen regularly lectures and teaches seminars for local contractors and companies. His greatest desire in his construction practice is to teach contractors the benefit of investing in thorough contract creation and review on the front end of things, saving clients from endless litigation and hassle. He has been awarded Utah's Legal Elite in Utah Business from 2008-2011, Service Member of the Year from SUBHA in 2013, and AV Rating with Martindale-Hubbell in 2017.

Mr. Jensen's happy place is the Lake Powell - He believes it to be the best and only possible vacation option, though you can also find him mountain biking with his kids, participating in politics, leading his church congregation, and enjoying quality time with his family.

J. Wendell Bayles

Of Counsel

Mr. Bayles attended the University of Utah where he graduated in 1964 with his BS degree in economics as a social science. He then went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Utah, graduating first in his class in 1965. He was then accepted to New York University where he received his LLM in taxation on a full-ride scholarship. After concluding his formal education he went to work for Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough in Salt Lake City, Utah. After becoming a partner there he simultaneously taught as a visiting professor at the U. He left law practice to serve as professor and Associate Dean from 1975-1980 at the University of Utah’s School of Law. He currently enjoys spending time traveling the world with his wife, spending time with their 60+ grandchildren, and consulting as an “of counsel” member of local law firm JensenBayles, LLP. For years he ran a small herd of sheep, thus earning the title of “Sheepherder at Law.”

James L. Spendlove

Senior Associate

Mr. Spendlove joined JensenBayles, LLP in 2006, developing a civil litigation practice which handles large, complex, high profile cases, including construction defect, insurance defense, estate and trust litigation, real estate, as well as business and commercial litigation. Mr. Spendlove is also involved in the legal community, as treasurer of the Southern Utah Bar Association from 2007 to 2010 and again in 2016, and President of the Southern Utah Bar Association in 2017.
Mr. Spendlove obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Utah State University. After which he received a Juris Doctorate from George Mason University, School of Law in Arlington Virginia. He is a member of the Utah Bar Association, Southern Utah Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Mr. Spendlove has received the recognition of his peers in the legal community, holding an AV Preeminent Rating with Martindale-Hubble and voted by other lawyers in Utah as one of Utah’s Legal Elite in the area of Civil Litigation. He has also taught legal training to other attorneys on issues including disputes over trusts and estates, real estate, and construction defect.
Mr. Spendlove is a graduate of Hurricane High School. He and his family enjoy taking advantage of all of the outdoor and off road opportunities available in Southern Utah. He also has an interest in anything with a motor and wheels.

Phillip G. Gubler

Associate

Mr. Gubler joined law office of JensenBayles, LLP in the Spring of 2011. He was born and raised in Southern Utah and has enjoyed the opportunity to live and work around the red rocks. Phillip has focused his career on estate planning (Trust, Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives), probate, guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions, real estate transactions, landlord/tenant, and business law. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Southern Utah Estate Planning Council and volunteers his time at the St. George Senior Center giving legal advice.

Mr. Gubler earned his Bachelors degree from Dixie State College in 2002. He then went on to Washburn University School of Law to earn a JD where he served as the President of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society (2003-2004), a Student Research Editor (2003), and a member of the Business Law Society. He is a member of the Southern Utah Bar Association, the Utah State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

Mr. Gubler received an AV Preeminent Rating with Martindale-Hubbell in 2017 and has received countless accolades from satisfied clients.

B. Cory Lee

Associate

Mr. Lee joined the law office of JensenBayles, LLP in June of 2018. Mr. Lee’s primary focus is on tax law, including tax planning (business formation, choice of entity, mergers and acquisitions) and tax controversy (IRS and state audits, tax liens, IRS settlements), he also works on business law matters, contracts, litigation and real estate disputes.

Mr. Lee got his BS from the University of Utah in Economics in 2007. After taking time off from school and working in retail, Cory attended law school at the University of Missouri – Columbia, focusing his studies on tax and gaining extensive exposure to tax law through an externship with IRS Office of Chief Counsel (2014), serving as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) coordinator at the law school (2015), taking first place in the Transactional Law Competition (2015) and earning a Tax Law Certificate, with honors. Additionally, Cory served in the J. Reuben Clark Society in various capacities, most notably as Co-Chair of the Event Planning Committee (2013-2014) and as the Student Committee Board Chair (2014-2015). After law school, Cory went to the University of Florida Levin College of Law and earned a Masters of Law (LLM) in Taxation.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Mr. Lee worked in New York City for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the Tax Mergers and Acquisition department, where he was exposed to complex tax matters in working with Fortune 500 companies.

Cheyenne Jones

Executive Assistant

Cheyenne joined the JensenBayles team in June of 2018, with the hopes of gaining knowledge and experience as she prepares to apply for and attend law school. Previously, she worked for 3 years in a program for children with behavioral, academic, and social struggles. She grew up in Utah and graduated from Dixie State University with her Bachelors in Human Communication. She is 1 of 9 children and loves her big family. Her siblings and her parents are her best friends and a big part of what makes life so rich. Cheyenne loves sports and the outdoors. She spends most of her weekends hiking, camping, and playing sand volleyball. She is enjoying her time with the JensenBayles firm and loves her coworkers.

Gemma Hill

Accountant

Gemma joined the firm in July of 2017. Her 12-year experience working for a law firm made her a perfect fit for our needs. Her expertise is a great addition to our staff. She maintains the vendor and client database and uses integrated accounting modules. The scope of Gemma’s work expands, she also functions as Finance Manager and Budget Officer for the firm. Gemma is one of those rare employees whose sense of loyalty and dedication makes her a key employee to JensenBayles. She maintains comprehensive and organized record-keeping and retained pertinent information to support our books. Gemma’s high-level editing and detailed review of firm business documents dictates her remarkable toil.
Her experience in working for an Accounting Firm and H&R Block sharpened her skills in Tax Preparation and has dealt on issues with the IRS, Franchise Tax Board and the State Board of Equalization. In her previous company, she was the lead in the production of extensive documentation required by the IRS Agents during and until the conclusion of the Audit.
She can initiate and execute tasks with utmost consideration on the company’s success. She makes executive decisions within the bounds of her authority. Every employer she has had can vouch for her capacity to deliver highly professional and quality labor.
Gemma balances work and family. She’s married to a school teacher who retired recently. She has a beautiful daughter who gives her joy. In her free time enjoys making movies and playing chess. She believes in quality over quantity. Gemma likes to say, “Life is too short but there’s a lot to get done. You need to identify your deadlines, so you can beat them.”

Adam Bayles

Marketing Director

Adam works with sales representatives to put together marketing contracts. Adam believes that Marketing is one of the most important things that a business can do to prosper. He has worked at JensenBayles for the last 3 years in varying capacities.

Adam was awarded an Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Desert Hills High School in 2018 with high honors. Adam has earned an academic scholarship to Dixie State University and is currently enrolled in classes there pursuing a degree in business and preparing to take the LSAT.

Wendi Perkins

Paralegal

Wendi joined our firm as an experienced paralegal in May of 2013. She began her career in Salt Lake City with the law firm Ray, Quinney & Nebeker and was employed with Harrison Kemp & Jones, Chtd. in Las Vegas, Nevada for five years before settling in the St. George area in 1993. She attended the Southern Nevada Paralegal Program and received her certification in 1989. Previously, Wendi was employed with LexisNexis as an independent contractor, working throughout seven southern Utah counties.

Wendi is married to Rick Perkins and they have two children, Zach and Katie; and two beautiful grand-daughters. They are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first grandson in November. Zach received his Bachelor Degree in English and has been accepted to Western Michigan Law School beginning Fall of 2018. Katie will be a Senior at Dixie State University and will receive her Bachelor Degree in Health Communication in May, 2019. Together Rick and Wendi enjoy traveling, boating and 4 wheeling. Wendi and her family are avid golfers and have a passion for the outdoors.

Legal Assistant

Janae joined the JensenBayles, LLP team in March 2017 after relocating back to Utah from the Bay Area. While in the Bay Area, she worked for an insurance brokerage firm, a chocolatier and a school district. For over a year, she has been the friendly voice answering our incoming calls. In June 2018, Janae began overseeing company formations and renewals for our clients. She is a mother of three and a nana to two super cute grandkids. She loves watching movies, eating out and spending time with her family.

Annie Schwiermann

Legal Assistant

Annie joined JensenBayles in June of 2018 as a legal assistant. Although this is her first experience working in a law firm, she is eager to learn and help those in need. She has always believed that no matter how hard the work is, it is always worth seeing the smile of those around her.

Annie graduated from Marlborough High School in 2017 with high honors after a year full of AP classes, A Capella Choirs, Orchestra and working nearly full-time. Now that she is newly married she loves spending time with her husband and her family. You can often find her using a musical instrument, painting, or making the ones around her laugh.

Heilish Gordon

Receptionist

Heilish is currently studying accounting at Dixie State University and loves every second of it. She is the Vice-President of the Pre-Law Club at Dixie State University and is enjoying the many opportunities she has through the club. She will graduate with her Bachelor’s degree in May 2019, and then hopes to pursue a career in Law. Heilish loves traveling, listening to podcasts, music, and fitness. She has one younger sister who is her best friend; they are rarely seen apart. Heilish is also passionate about politics and is always trying to stay informed.

Sadie Gubler

Sadie spends most of her time assisting in the accounting department. She also assists the staff with various projects and helps keep the office organized and clean. Sadie is a junior at Snow Canyon High School and will start Hair School in January 2019. She also volunteers at a local Elementary School once a week to help kids learn to code, and is involved with 4H and Youth Court. Sadie's motto is ``What is life if we are not living it to the fullest?`` When Sadie isn't volunteering or working, she can be found water coloring, cooking, running or watching her favorite TV show.

Amy has worked at JensenBayles since she was fourteen, beginning first as custodial staff, then later assisting with administrative and organizational efforts. She usually spends her summers here, but you may see her running around during the holidays. During the school year she is a nursing student at Brigham Young University and loves to spend time volunteering at Primary Children's Hospital with the Kids Crew. She hopes to one day work in a pediatric unit, but until then she is grateful to be gaining professional experience in our office. Amy loves Canada, drawing, playing tennis, reading and spending time with her family.

Lindsay Allred

Marketing

Lindsay has supported Tom and Robert since the very beginnings of JensenBayles. She has worked as a janitor, intern, receptionist, legal assistant, marketing director, hiring manager, and executive assistant. She has enjoyed watching the firm flourish into the accomplished firm it is today.

Lindsay works remotely while attending Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas.

Lindsay holds a BS with Magna Cum Laude in communication with from Dixie State University.
